The length of courses involved can be from 4 to 24 months, depending on what level of degree a person chooses to obtain. Human anatomy, blood drawing techniques, and lab procedures are some of the first courses to be taken, and there will be courses in lab procedures and theoretical training.

Upon completion of your schooling it is possible to take the exam to become certified. These are administered by the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), Association of Phlebotomy Technicians (APT) and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
